Steam power enabled Zeta to sail via the Magellan Straights as opposed to around Cape Horn. The voyage was so successful that it prompted the Pacific Steam Navigation Company to run steamers directly to Chile from Liverpool on this route. However in Swansea there was never any great enthusiasm for steam power partly because of the cost of the enormous amount of coal needed
