The New Cut, Swansea

By Act of Parliament 1836, the New Cut was developed. The scheme was first mooted by Henry Vivian in 1826. The painting shows two barques unloading boxes or 'parties' of copper ore. The ore came down from the copper mines in Chile on mules, each carrying two 100-pound bags. You'll also notice in the painting an early telescopic railway bridge, allowing tall shops to sail up the River Tawe to the copper works. In the distance is Morriston Castle, a block of flats that housed 50 families, built by Robert Morris to take his workers out of the sulphurous fumes in the valley. The Landore railway viaduct is also shown, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, dates ca. 1850
