This shows a small boat leaving the lighthouse for the school at Oystermouth. Local historian Fona Beynon recalled school children making this trip daily by rowing boat. The Mumbles lighthouse maintained a gun with the Royal Artillery providing a sergeant and guard who lived on the island as late as 1883. The guns were eventually pitched into the sea in 1909.
